ANNOUNCE: xfce4-terminal 0.8.5 released

Igor Zakharov
xfce4-terminal 0.8.5 is now available for download from

  http://archive.xfce.org/src/apps/xfce4-terminal/0.8/xfce4-terminal-0.8.5.tar.bz2
  http://archive.xfce.org/src/apps/xfce4-terminal/0.8/xfce4-terminal-0.8.5.tar.bz2.md5
  http://archive.xfce.org/src/apps/xfce4-terminal/0.8/xfce4-terminal-0.8.5.tar.bz2.sha1
  http://archive.xfce.org/src/apps/xfce4-terminal/0.8/xfce4-terminal-0.8.5.tar.bz2.sha256

What is xfce4-terminal?
=======================

Xfce4-terminal is a modern terminal emulator for the Unix/Linux desktop
- primarily for the Xfce desktop environment. It is a lightweight
emulator based on the VTE widget, easy to use and provides an optional
drop-down window (game-console style).

Release notes for 0.8.5
=======================
0.8.5
=====
- Do not change drop-down window size when zooming in/out
- Create terminal of desired size instead of default size of 80x24: this
allows
to avoid resizing the terminal right after creation (#13521)
- Use default terminal geometry when --geometry parameter is used but
its value
only contains X and Y offsets
- Improve label layout in preferences dialog: restrict max width to 80
chars
  (#13497)
- Add --minimize command line option
- Calculate screen dimensions properly when having multiple monitors
- Prevent clipboard from being filled with garbage (#13403)
- Resolve deprecation warnings: gtk_show_uri_on_window,
  gdk_screen_make_display_name, gdk_screen_get_width/height
- Silence most of deprecation warnings that are not resolved
- Make Preferences dialog app-global - the same dialog window will be
used
  by multiple terminal windows
- Remove large space to the left of tab text when the text is too short
(this allows tabs to be smaller)
- Gtk3 required version bumped to 3.16.0
- Fix memory leaks
- Close Find dialog when closing parent terminal window
- Close Set Title dialog when closing its corresponding tab
- Translation updates: Catalan, Chinese (Taiwan), German, Greek, Hebrew,
Kazakh,
Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmal, Polish, Portuguese (Brasil), Russian,
Serbian,
  Slovenian, Swedish, Thai, Ukrainian

With the default font size, when I:
 - use a term on my left monitor, and
 - create an xfce4-terminal on the right monitor with this geometry:

    xfce4-terminal --geometry 80x90+1920+0

then the new terminal is created with rows 134 (rather than 90).

But, if I use a term on my RHS monitor to create the new
xfce5-terminal with that geometry, it has the correct size (80x90).

I believe this is a window manager bug.

Re: ANNOUNCE: xfce4-terminal 0.8.5 released

Hi Zenaan,

Thanks for the report!

I have some questions to you:
1. Have you tried 0.8.5.1?
2. If you change you second monitor orientation to horizontal, will this help?
3. Do other terminal apps, such as xterm and gnome-terminal, behave the same way?

Thanks,
Igor

No, but it's not the pty/term program, just the window manager I'm
pretty sure.

>    2. If you change you second monitor orientation to horizontal, will this help?

Yes this solves the problem of course - when both monitors are the
same resolution and the same orientation. The problem is when the
horiz/vert resolution of one monitor (where the mouse is currently
on), is different to the resolution of the target monitor on which
the new term is actually created/displayed.

Yes, it's the same at least for xterm and xfce4-terminal

Zenaan

Yes, this probably indicates that the problem doesn't belong to xfce4-terminal but rather to window manager.

Thanks,
Igor

Agreed. I filed the bug against xfwm which I believe to be the
culprit. I'm not a C programmer, but might try to look at that if I
get time.

Thanks again,
Zenaan
